Terroir
Natural factors
- Soils with a clear predominance of the Marnoso-arenacea formation: alternating arenaria and marne strata, with topography shaped by collapses and badlands (calanchi).
- Near the plain, a calcare formation outcrops with steep slopes and deep erosive incisions.
- Hill-vineyard soils: moderately deep, well-drained, moderately alkaline, with a tendency toward calcareous character, and low in organic matter.
- Winkler Index increasing from the Apennines toward the plain: ranging from 1,500 to 2,200 degree-days.
Human factors
- Pliny the Elder cites Cesena as a wine-producing city in the Roman imperial period; the «Caesenas» wines were among the recognized «appellations» of that era.
- Leandro Alberti (16th century) describes Bertinoro as «adorned with beautiful vineyards» and Cesena with «the first hills of the Apennines full of vines».
Terroir / wine link
- Hill soils tending toward calcareous or highly calcareous character, moderately to very deep, with good water-holding capacity, shaped by the Marnoso-arenacea formation.
