Terroir
Natural factors
- Triassic rocks (Buntsandstein, Muschelkalk, Keuper) form the characteristic scarp-and-vale landscape and shape the character of Frankenwein.
- In the Vorspessart (western zone), the soils consist of gneiss and mica schist from the basement rock.
- The climate is subcontinental, with annual precipitation below 550 mm, placing the region among the driest in Bayern.
- The meandering Main shapes south- to west-facing, concave Steillage sites on the outer bends of the Main valley.
- Continental easterly air flows in winter cause pronounced cooling, bringing winter frosts and late frosts.
Human factors
- A fine-grained ownership structure resulting from partible inheritance; approximately 20% of vineyards are Steil- and terrace sites requiring a high degree of hand labour.
- The principal varieties Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Burgunder, and Domina have defined the typicity of the individual sites for centuries.
Product characteristics
- The typicity, minerality, and individuality of the sites are perceptible in the sensory profile of the wines.
- Sparkling Qualitätsschaumwein requires an earlier harvest to achieve a pronounced acid structure and a minimum of nine months of bottle fermentation.
Terroir / wine link
- Triassic rocks (Buntsandstein, Muschelkalk, Keuper) as well as mica schist are identified in the Einziges Dokument as the foundations of the typicity, minerality, and individuality of the wines.
Facts drawn from the cahier's terroir-link section (Lien au terroir) by automatic interpretation — see the source.
