Principal grape varieties
Terroir
Natural factors
- The variety's original nucleus lies in the north-western area of Monferrato, between the Piedmontese Tertiary basin and the moraine hills of Turin.
- Its presence is documented in the land registers of the Comune di Chieri as early as the sixteenth century.
- The variety is typically cultivated on mid-slope hillsides that are not excessively sun-exposed, owing to its poor drought resistance.
- Its area of predilection is the territory north of the province of Asti, where it is widespread throughout the Monferrato Astigiano.
Product characteristics
- Traditional styles include vivace, frizzante, spumante (dry or off-dry), and still; a sweet version is also made in the cellar for domestic use.
- High tannicity and fresh fruity aromas make Freisa valued as a blending grape and naturally lend themselves to frizzante and spumante styles.
