Terroir
Natural factors
- Eastern hill zone: Eocene marne interbedded with arenaria ('Flysch di Cormòns'), known in Friulian dialect as 'Ponca'.
- Western plain: alluvial deposits from the rivers (Tagliamento, Isonzo, Torre, Natisone…), with textures ranging from sandy loam to silty sandy loam.
- Central plain (Udine–Pordenone): vast quantities of calcareous-dolomitic material transported downstream by mountain watercourses.
- Three distinct morphological areas: hillside, central plains, and coastal zone; hills to the west and north feature morenic soils composed of gravel in a silty argille matrix.
Human factors
- Documented viticultural origins dating to 700 BC: the wine Pucino was prized in Rome, and Aquileia served as a distribution hub toward north-eastern Europe.
- In the 19th century Count De la Tour introduced Pinot, Merlot, and Sauvignon; today the appellation focuses on mass selection of ancient biotypes rather than clonal selection.
Terroir / wine link
- The 'Ponca' (Eocene flysch of marne and arenaria) yields wines of greater structure and body compared with the plain, producing reds with an herbaceous profile and whites of aromatic complexity.
