Terroir
Natural factors
- Territory limited to the single commune of Gigondas (Vaucluse), defined by the Dentelles de Montmirail oriented east–west.
- Complex geology: Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous substrates surrounded by Oligocene and Miocene formations, making this the most geologically complex point on the left bank of the Rhône.
- Upper zone: sandy mollasse and limestone, skeletal soils, very warm, drought-resistant.
- Lower zone: Ouvèze river terraces with red soils (diluvium, loess, sandstone), highly stony, very permeable, and rich in clay fraction.
- Vineyards between 160 and 400 m elevation, west- and north-west-facing; the Mistral keeps the vineyard healthy, partially sheltered from the wind by the rocky ridges of the Dentelles.
Human factors
- As early as 1771, the Conseil de Gigondas regulated the harvest: picking without consular permission was forbidden, on pain of a fine.
Product characteristics
- An age-worthy red: ruby to deep garnet in colour, ripe red and black fruits in youth, evolving toward forest floor and truffle.
- White: pale with green highlights, mineral and balanced; Clairette expresses salinity and freshness according to the terroir.
Terroir / wine link
- The Mistral limits cryptogamic diseases and promotes berry concentration, while the Dentelles de Montmirail shelter the vineyard from its excesses.
