Natural factors
- Soils of 'red earths' derived from the dissolution of calcareous rocks, rich in potassium, with skeleton content up to 60% of total constituents.
- Clay or clay-silt texture with a high proportion of skeleton (~60%), a favored substrate for grapes destined for both red and white wines.
- Multi-year average temperatures rarely exceeding 30 °C or falling below 0 °C; summer minima seldom dropping below 18 °C.
Human factors
- The vine was already cultivated in the area between the 8th and 3rd centuries BC (Peucezia): wine vessels have been unearthed at Monte Sannace, the largest known Peucetian settlement.
Product characteristics
- Ruby-garnet in color, dry and appropriately tannic with a characteristic vinous bouquet. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
