Human factors
- The name "Grance" appeared in Siena in 1318, in the first statute of the Spedale Santa Maria della Scala, to designate fortified farms managed by the hospital.
- The Grance, established in the thirteenth century, administered vast landholdings in Val d'Arbia, Val d'Orcia, and Maremma; the vineyard was the second most important crop.
Terroir / wine link
- Vineyard soils that are sandy, skeletal, and moderately alkaline in reaction, with good internal drainage: an ideal substrate for moderating vine vigour.
