Terroir
Natural factors
- To the south, Würmian clay-limestone and gravelly terraces deposited by the Aygues river; to the west, fluvial terraces of the Rhône.
- The dominant Mistral reinforces aridity; continental influences caused by the hills blocking the Rhône valley bring harsher winters.
Human factors
- The Donzère wine estate (~50–80 AD): a treading floor, presses, 204 dolia, a capacity of ~2,500 hl; the second-largest Roman winery ever discovered.
Product characteristics
- Reds: grenache N at the limit of ripeness contributes finesse and roundness; syrah N provides tannic structure, colour intensity, and vegetal/floral aromas. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
- Dry whites: a blend of southern varieties (bourboulenc, grenache B, clairette) and northern varieties (marsanne, roussanne, viognier) developing aromatic complexity and roundness.
Terroir / wine link
- Poor, free-draining, warm soils yield supple, fruity, well-structured reds; whites with a broad aromatic range; and supple, fruity rosés.
