Natural factors
- 68 communes across 3 départements: Loire-Atlantique, Maine-et-Loire, and Vendée; the westernmost extension of the Val de Loire.
- Ancient basement: plutonic formations (granites, gabbros) and metamorphic formations (gneiss, mica schist, amphibolite, eclogite), sometimes overlaid with Tertiary sandy-gravelly sediments.
- Acidic soils, rich in coarse elements, well-drained, low in fertility, and free of excess moisture; the delimited area is restricted to steep slopes with shallow sandy soils.
- Oceanic climate: mild winters promoting early soil warming, cool summers tempered by sea breezes, and high sunshine levels for the latitude.
- Vineyards planted on hillocks and slopes around the Lac de Grand-Lieu, the Goulaine marshes, and the Loire valley; a dense network of watercourses to the south and east of Nantes. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Human factors
- The grape variety folle blanche B, known as 'Gros Plant', became established in the 16th century under Dutch influence; its name appears in a written document dated 1732.
- The 'méthode nantaise' consists of leaving wines on their fine lees for at least one winter without any racking; its 'sur lie' designation was formally regulated in 1977.
Product characteristics
- Very pale yellow appearance with green highlights; a fresh, light, and zesty balance; fruity, floral, and iodine-tinged aromas.
- 'Sur lie' designation: a rounder palate, a more complex bouquet, and a slight spritz from residual CO₂; bottling is mandatory.
Terroir / wine link
- Coarse acidic soils over granite, gneiss, mica schist, or sandy gravels, combined with mild winters, lead to an early start to the vegetative cycle and fully achieved ripeness.
