Terroir
Natural factors
- Proximity to the sea creates a microclimate of mild winters and cool summers.
- Vineyards situated at 25–100 metres altitude on the south-western side of the island.
- The Χαλικούνα plain extends from Lake Κορισσίων (NATURA) to Πρασούδι and the Byzantine fortress of Γαρδίκιο.
- High summer temperatures and αμμώδες soil allow for an early harvest (20–30 August) compared to the rest of the island.
Human factors
- The Kakotrygi variety has been associated with the Χαλικούνα area for more than 300 years.
- During the years 1882–1890, demand from France drove the expansion of Kakotrygi vine cultivation in Corfu.
Product characteristics
- Kakotrygi Χαλικούνα can yield a wine with an alcoholic strength of up to 15% vol when harvested late.
Terroir / wine link
- The αμμώδες, rapidly draining, aeolian-formed soil and the seaside microclimate lead to early ripening of Kakotrygi.
