Natural factors
- The entire département of Haute-Marne, crossed by the watershed dividing the English Channel/North Sea and Mediterranean drainage basins.
- Sedimentary substrates: Jurassic cuestas (limestones, marls, clays) and Triassic argillo-arenaceous and dolomitic formations in the southeast.
- The Plateau de Langres: a dominant limestone massif rising above 500 m in elevation, forming the main watershed.
- Cool oceanic climate with continental influence; mean temperature 10.5 °C; the most highly regarded vineyards receive under 800 mm of rainfall per year.
- Vines planted on south-facing limestone or marly hillsides, at elevations between 250 and 350 m.
