Terroir
Natural factors
- Cool climate with fresh nights and mild winters due to the proximity of the North Sea, conducive to viticulture.
- Vineyards on south-facing slopes of Monteberg, Kemmelberg, Baneberg, Vidaigneberg, Rodeberg, Zwarteberg, and Scherpenberg.
- Poor, acidic zandleem soil with excellent drainage thanks to ironstone sandstone and a deep water table.
- Ironstone sandstone at the surface creates a warmer microclimate that allows the grapes to ripen more fully.
Product characteristics
- Heuvellandse wijnen: aromatic, mineral, and fresh in character; a spicy-floral bouquet; light to moderately full-bodied; ageing potential of 2 to over 5 years.
- Sparkling wines are fairly full-bodied, elegant, and complex; cool nights keep alcohol low (< 12.5%) and preserve freshness.
Terroir / wine link
- Ironstone sandstone creates a warmer microclimate that enables better grape ripening and keeps the wine balanced in terms of sweetness and acidity.
