Natural factors
- Geological substrate: Paleogene and Cretaceous calcareous platforms (23–130 Ma), representing the final sedimentary layer of the Cenozoic Paris Basin.
- Pedological homogeneity is ensured by a layer of aeolian silts that can exceed 1 metre in depth, blanketing the limestone formations across all plateaus.
- Gently undulating relief (average elevation ~100 m); meandering rivers oriented east–west creating numerous south- and north-facing slopes.
- Geographic sub-units with distinct soils: Lutetian limestone around Paris, high active limestone content (~40%) at Guérard, and Eocene plastic clay at Provins.
