Natural factors
- Temperate Mediterranean climate (Köppen), with 650 mm of rainfall concentrated mainly in autumn–winter and 2,000 sunshine hours per year.
- Heat summation (base 10 °C) of 2,005 degree-days; summer drought with evapotranspiration exceeding precipitation.
- Soils of medium to heavy texture with high water-holding capacity, belonging to the Alfisols, Entisols, and Inceptisols orders.
- Vineyards at 80–350 m elevation, with marked variation in aspect and orientation that creates multiple terroir units.
- Pronounced physiographic variability extends to the level of the individual vineyard, differentiating the intensity of organoleptic characters.
Human factors
- The ΠΟΠ Νάουσα was established by royal decree in 1971 for a dry red wine from Ξινόμαυρο with mandatory ageing in oak barrels.
- As early as the beginning of the 20th century, producers had established an authenticity seal label and a first classification of vineyards by qualitative potential.
