Natural factors
- Island of volcanic origin: the Epomeo (788 m) is a submarine volcano that subsided over the last 130,000 years, still emergent at the surface.
- Soils dominated by green volcanic tufo, present on the terraced vineyards built with dry-stone walls of green tufo.
- Monte Epomeo, the highest point at 788 m, situated in the centre of the island, commands a total surface area of approximately 46.3 km².
- The vineyards extend from the coastline to the steep mountain slopes on terraced plots; insular morphology with 34 km of coastline.
- Approximate trapezoidal shape: 10 km east–west, 7 km north–south, approximately 18 nautical miles from Napoli.
Human factors
- The Coppa di Nestore (725 BC), unearthed at Lacco Ameno, attests to Greek viticulture on the island and is the oldest known example of poetry written in Greek.
- From 1500 onwards, bulk white wine was exported by sea in 'carrati' aboard wine-carrying vessels as far as Dalmatia.
Terroir / wine link
