Terroir
Natural factors
- The AOC covers 4 communes (Émeringes, Juliénas, Jullié in the Rhône; Pruzilly in Saône-et-Loire), arranged in a south-east-facing amphitheatre.
Human factors
- The vineyard is said to be two thousand years old, linked to Julius Caesar; the AOC was recognised in 1938; under the Ancien Régime a tithe of 147 barrels was levied.
- Winemaking combines traditional fermentation and semi-carbonic maceration; short pruning and high vine density are used to manage Gamay N.
Product characteristics
- The palate is lively, well-structured, fruity, and full-bodied, with minerality and occasional tannic character.
Terroir / wine link
- Acidic soils of schist and granite give Gamay N the structure and the deep violet-red colour characteristic of Juliénas.
