Terroir
Natural factors
- Gravelly soils on hillside slopes, derived from glacial movement and fluvio-glacial erosion.
- Around Caldaro, soils of volcanic origin: red porfido mixed with argille and sand, low in humus.
- In the southern portion of the viticultural zone, calcareous-dolomitic soils predominate.
- Lake Caldaro contributes to the local Mediterranean microclimate; soils also include morene deposits and fluvial alluvium.
Human factors
- Winemaking documented as early as 500 BC, with wine exported to the Roman imperial court and later, in the Middle Ages, to Austria and southern Germany. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
