Terroir
Natural factors
- Soils divided into two environments: recent sediments and coastal alluvial deposits versus terraced Pleistocene alluvial fans.
- Sedimentary-dominant geology: sedimentary lithologies throughout the entire area of the Piana di Sant'Eufemia.
- Humid to sub-humid climate: rainfall concentrated in December, at a minimum in July, with an annual average of 950 mm and 16.1 °C.
- The zone extends across the southern slopes of the Reventino massif, overlooking the Piana di Sant'Eufemia.
- The second most densely planted wine territory in Calabria after Cirò, spanning 9 communes all within the province of Catanzaro.
Human factors
- Phoenician origins dating to 2000 BC: the Phoenicians introduced vitis sativa into the Piana di Sant'Eufemia.
- The name Lamezia emerged only in 1968: prior to that, the wine was marketed under the name of the commune of origin of the grapes.
