Terroir
Natural factors
- The zone covers more than 1,200 km², extending from the Ionian coastline to the Aspromonte massif, with a predominantly east-south-east aspect.
- The subsoil consists of Pliocene sediments resting on a Paleozoic crystalline basement, with Miocene conglomeratic outcrops.
- On the hilly uplands, soils developed on sandy or conglomeratic formations predominate; they are shallow, with signs of hydromorphism within 50 cm.
- On the ancient fluvial terraces: soils with an argillic accumulation horizon, medium texture, and sub-acid reaction.
- Climate ranging from sub-humid to sub-arid: rainfall concentrated in autumn and winter, a marked summer water deficit, and maximum temperatures in August.
Human factors
- The ampelographic base is founded on grape varieties traditionally cultivated in the Locride area, without the introduction of outside varieties.
- Production systems have recently been revised through the involvement of technical experts and researchers, with priority given to portions of the territory suited to innovative techniques.
Terroir / wine link
- Sandy or conglomeratic soils on the hilly uplands, with hydromorphism within 50 cm and a moderate presence of soluble salts.
