Terroir
Natural factors
- Soils developed on granites and porfidi with brown earths and lithosols; acidic or sub-acidic reaction and low levels of nitrogen and phosphorus.
- Presence of crystalline scisti and quartzites among the base geological formations of the viticultural zone.
- The planted vineyards are distributed across plateaux and mid-slope hills in the west-central part of Sardegna.
- Mean annual temperature very close to 10 °C; annual rainfall between 700 and 900 mm.
- Natural vegetation of Mediterranean maquis (cistus, strawberry tree, mastic, broom, myrtle, holm oak) alternating with pastureland.
Human factors
- Muristellu (Bovale sardo), the base of the blend alongside Cannonau and Monica, is thought to derive from the Spanish Morastel, introduced to Sardegna during Aragonese rule.
- In 1950 local growers founded the Cantina del Mandrolisai; the traditional training system is alberello, with low yields.
