Terroir
Natural factors
- Plateau at a mean elevation of 660 m, with soils spanning three soil taxonomic orders: Entisols, Inceptisols, and Alfisols.
- Flat sections: αλλουβιακά deposits of sandy-clay materials and Terra Rossa; slopes: ασβεστόλιθος and dolomitic limestone.
- Typical μεσογειακό κλίμα: annual rainfall of 781 mm, peaking in December (176 mm) and at its lowest in August (14 mm).
- Summer northerly winds temper the effect of seasonal heat, favouring the retention of acidity.
Human factors
- Viticulture dating back to antiquity; Homer described Μαντινεία as 'rich in vines' and the region is closely associated with the cult of Dionysus.
Product characteristics
- Dry white: straw-yellow with greenish/pink highlights, notes of citrus, lemon blossom, rose, and jasmine, with a characteristic acidity.
- Αφρώδης οίνος: pale yellow-green, fine bubbles, aromas of rose, honey, and yeast, pronounced acidity, and a finish ranging from dry to sweet.
Terroir / wine link
- The 660 m elevation and cool climate lead to late ripening of Μοσχοφίλερο (first ten days of October), preserving high acidity.
