Terroir
Natural factors
- Vineyards between 50 and 650 m above sea level, ranging from the coastal strip to the mid-to-upper hillsides. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
- Sedimentary hill formations with calcareo-argillosa, argillosa, arenacea, and sandy or gravelly matrices.
- Three characteristic geological formations: scaglia cinerea, bisciaro, and schlier.
- Predominant substrates: calcareous-nitic-pelitic, marnose, and marnoso-calcaree rocks, with the presence of conglomerates and Pleistocene terraces.
- Mediterranean coastal climate, sub-Mediterranean toward the interior, oceanic in the mountains; rainfall 750–850 mm/year, average temperatures 11–14 °C.
Human factors
- Between the 6th and 13th centuries, abbeys and monks preserved and transmitted viticultural techniques throughout the Marche, tending to the aging potential of wines in ecclesiastical vineyards.
Terroir / wine link
- Calcareo-argillosi, argillosi, and arenacea hillside soils — where the vineyards are concentrated — shape the characteristic minerality of IGT Marche wines.
