Terroir
Natural factors
- The province is divided into three distinct zones: mountainous (14%), hilly-median (70%), and flat (16%), each with different morphoclimatic characteristics.
- The inland highlands are dominated by Monte Amiata (over 1,700 m) and the Cornate di Gerfalco (over 1,000 m), with forests of beech, fir, holm oak, and chestnut trees.
- Sandy soils over Eocene arenaria and travertine conglomerates: loose, permeable, and of modest fertility, widespread throughout the Maremma hinterland.
- Pliocene sandy, calcareous soils with gravel and silica, common in the hilly and foothill zones where vine and olive define the landscape.
Human factors
- The territory is articulated into three distinct zones differentiated by climate and morphology: mountainous (14%), hilly-foothill (70%), and flat (16%).
