Terroir
Natural factors
- Vineyards at 80–350 m elevation, on rolling terrain with vines growing up to 200 m from the sea.
- Soils are predominantly ασβεστόλιθος, with localised sandy-clay-silt and silty-clay zones.
- Mediterranean, xerothermic climate; zero summer rainfall, with an annual precipitation of approximately 300 mm.
- Seasonal summer μελτέμια and moderate north-easterly winter winds shape the local microclimate.
- Marine breezes complement the climatic profile owing to the proximity of the sea.
Human factors
- Viticulture in Markopoulo is documented from the 5th century BC, with an altar to Dionysus at the Temple of Brauronian Artemis.
- In 1914 the MARKO cooperative was founded; the dominant variety is Σαββατιανό (90%), the foundation of traditional retsina.
Terroir / wine link
- The distinctiveness of the wines is attributed to the soil, the climate, and the influence of the summer winds in combination with the cultivated varieties.
