Terroir
Natural factors
- Three distinct orographic environments: coastal plain, marine terraces, and the hilly surfaces of the Fossa Bradanica.
- Fossa Bradanica soils with sandy-conglomeratic lithologies, highly calcareous and with high permeability.
- Marine terraces with deep, well-drained, intense red soils, the color deriving from their high iron content.
- Malvasia at higher elevations on white soils derived from marne and calcareniti; Primitivo at lower elevations on brown soils.
Human factors
- Sparkling wine production dating from the early 1900s; during the 1950s and 1960s many estates specialized in this sector, commercializing their wines beyond the region as well.
Product characteristics
- Fresh, lightly colored whites on sandy soils; more intense and deeply colored wines on argille; greater aromatic finesse where calcare is present.
- Primitivo and Cabernet Sauvignon display great aging potential; predominantly fruity aromas (berries and stone fruits) and floral notes across all wine types.
Terroir / wine link
- Sandy soils → acidity and sapidity in whites; argille → deeper color in reds; calcare → aromatic finesse.
