Terroir
Natural factors
- Quaternary lithology with loessic deposits, gravel, sands, and Pleistocene loams, plus Pliocene lacustrine marls and clays in the Severinului podgorie.
- Dominant soils: brun-roșcat and leached cernoziom, with medium to clay-loam texture, rich in iron oxides.
- Moderate temperate-continental climate with a Mediterranean nuance, owing to the frequent influence of westerly and south-westerly air masses.
- Hilly relief at altitudes of 200–400 m, with quasi-tabular plateaus and frontal slopes of ~5°, with southern, south-western, or south-eastern aspects.
- Soils rich in iron oxides are directly correlated with the bright red colour and finesse of the red wines produced in the area.
Human factors
- A document dated 8 January 1407 records Mircea cel Bătrân granting the monastery of Cozia an annual allocation of wheat and wine, attesting to viticulture in the region.
- In 1900, analysts Munteanu and Roman confirmed that the red wines of Mehedinți were full in alcohol, rich in extract, and high in mineral content.
Product characteristics
- Full-bodied, alcoholic wines, rich in extract and minerals, with a bright red colour and finesse, attributable to the brun-roșcat soils and leached cernoziom.
- Soils rich in iron oxides lend red wines a bright red colour and a distinctive personality; the wines are well suited to ageing.
