Natural factors
- Continental (ηπειρωτικό κλίμα) with harsh winters and cool summers, due to altitude and proximity to Lake Plastiras.
- Vineyards on the eastern slopes of the Agrafa mountains, part of the Pindos range, with a south-easterly aspect.
- Sloping soils with small landholdings, unsuitable for other crops, on the mountainous and semi-mountainous hillsides.
Human factors
- From 1525 (Treaty of Tamasio) onwards, the people of Agrafa gained autonomy and the right to cultivate vines freely under Ottoman rule.
- Μαύρο Μεσενικόλα has been cultivated since the Frankish occupation; tradition links its name to a Byzantine nobleman who settled in the area.
Product characteristics
- Single-varietal wines from Μαύρο Μεσενικόλα display a deep colour, aromas of dark red fruits, and soft tannins.
- The ηπειρωτικό κλίμα, with harsh winters and cool summers, shapes the organoleptic profile of the ΠΟΠ Μεσενικόλα wines.
Terroir / wine link
- The ηπειρωτικό κλίμα, with cool summers owing to the altitude of the Agrafa range and proximity to Lake Plastiras, shapes the character of the wines.
