Terroir
Natural factors
- Semi-mountainous to mountainous relief, with elevations of 150–800 m and marked soil diversity.
- Very good soil drainage in the Meteora–Theopetra area, owing to its sedimentary geological composition.
- ηπειρωτικό κλίμα: wet, snowy winters and dry summers with intense sunshine (Hellenic National Meteorological Service data, 1958–2010).
- Cool northerly winds from the Pindus range and the Pineios–Lithaios rivers create mild conditions and a pronounced diurnal temperature variation.
Human factors
- Monks cultivated vineyards from the 11th century onwards; tax exemptions were granted by Bayezid I (1393/94).
- Grape seeds from the Theopetra cave have been dated to the Palaeolithic era, attesting to viticulture as far back as prehistory.
