Natural factors
- Average elevation between 300 and 700 m a.s.l., with more than half of the territory covered by woodland.
- Soils of medium texture with a tendency toward argille.
- Inland Toscana climate tempered by the Tyrrhenian coast: average annual temperatures approximately 14°C, annual rainfall below 900 mm.
- Rainfall concentrated in spring and late autumn/early winter; rarely excessive thermal fluctuations.
- The hillside is bordered to the east by the Cecina river and to the west by the Pavone torrent, which flows into the Cecina itself. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Human factors
- Viticultural presence documented since the Etruscan era, with objects found on-site preserved in the Etruscan museum of Volterra.
- In the 1840 Volterrano land registry, the dominant grape varieties were Sangiovese, Canajolo nero, Malvasia toscana, and Trebbiano bianco—the same varieties cultivated today.
