Terroir
Natural factors
- The southeastern tip of Greece, Ρόδος enjoys the highest sunshine duration in the country.
- Sea breezes from May through September temper the summer heat, shaping a μεσογειακό μικροκλίμα.
- Multiple microclimates: altitude, soil, and vineyard aspect combine differently across each sub-zone.
- The diversity of soils in conjunction with climatic conditions determines the quality characteristics of ΠΟΠ wines.
- The mountain character of the vineyard: altitude and slope favour low yields of mountain-grown grapes.
Human factors
- In 1971 Ρόδος received ΟΠΑΠ status for white, red, and sweet wines, thanks to the development of wineries from the early 20th century onward.
- Moscato di Trani is an Italian clone introduced to Ρόδος during the Italian occupation of the Dodecanese, originating from the city of Trani in Puglia.
Product characteristics
- The sun concentrates aromas and flavour in the skin of Μοσχάτο Άσπρο, giving it a golden-yellow colour with freckle-like spots.
- Moscato di Trani contributes to both dry white and sweet wines of the Aegean islands.
