Terroir
Natural factors
- Pink granite known as 'de Fleurie', with orthoclase and biotite, covered by sandy arenas ('grès' or 'gore') on 80% of soils (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
- Soils impregnated with manganese oxides derived from granitic veins; the most significant manganese deposit in France, discovered around 1750 at Romanèche-Thorins
- Varied relief ranging from 190 m to 420 m in altitude, between steep hillsides to the west and gentle terraces toward Romanèche-Thorins to the east
- The Saône valley channels southern influences (intense summer heat) and provides exceptional luminosity to east-facing vineyards
Human factors
- The windmill, built in 1550, gave its name to the AOC established by decree on 11 September 1936, following a 1924 ruling delimiting wines labelled 'Thorins ou Moulin-à-Vent'
- Gamay N is managed through high planting density, short pruning, and a vinification approach combining traditional fermentation with semi-carbonic maceration
Product characteristics
- Ruby to garnet in colour; the nose offers florals and ripe red fruits, evolving with age toward spice, truffle, and game
- Generous, full-bodied structure; approachable young, but gaining in finesse after several years of cellaring
Terroir / wine link
- The manganese present in the granitic subsoil is associated with the distinctive character of the wines, and its low fertility promotes expressive fruit aromas
