Terroir
Natural factors
- Vineyards between 300 and 900 m above sea level, distributed from the plains of La Mancha to terrain close to the Mediterranean.
- Low organic matter and high limestone content generate a surface crust that must be broken up mechanically.
- Main production zones: Bullas, Jumilla, Yecla, Abanilla, and Campo de Cartagena, on the Altiplano Levantino.
Human factors
- Expansion of the vineyard in the second half of the 19th century was driven by the French phylloxera crisis, which led to the planting of Monastrell to meet that demand.
- From the 1980s onward, modernization through temperature-controlled fermentation, stainless steel, and bottling lines replaced bulk wine sales.
Product characteristics
- Monastrell produces full, fleshy reds with deep color and high alcohol, well suited to oak ageing.
- The reds are characterized by high levels of pigmentation and tannins, resulting in round, structured wines.
Terroir / wine link
- A dry climate, calcareous soils, and Monastrell combined produce reds with high levels of pigmentation and tannins, round and structured.
