Terroir
Natural factors
- Geological substrate: loess and loessic deposits overlying Mesozoic and Tertiary limestones and calcareous sandstones of the South-Dobrogan platform.
- Tabular-structural relief (100–130 m), with Cretaceous and Sarmatian limestones on a Precambrian basement, covered by Quaternary loess up to 400 m thick.
- Representative soils: carbonatic and typic cernoziom on loessic substrate, typic and lithic rendzinas, regosols and eroded soils on degraded slopes.
- Marked aridity: 450 mm of annual rainfall, half falling during the growing season, compounded by frequent — near-daily — winds.
Human factors
- In 1907, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, and Muscat Ottonel were planted experimentally at Murfatlar by two Romanian viticulturists.
- The Murfatlar Viticultural Research Station, established in 1927, expanded the variety portfolio with Sauvignon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Italian Riesling.
Product characteristics
- Murfatlar red wines display an intense ruby-violet colour, a full-bodied palate, and soft tannins.
- Sparkling and pétillant wines develop floral aromas of acacia blossom and honey, with a lively and persistent mousse.
Terroir / wine link
- The calcareous soil, rich in calcium carbonate and combined with cernoziom on loess, imparts a balanced structure and freshness to the wines.
