Terroir
Natural factors
- Paleozoic primary bedrock (granites, gabbros, gneiss, mica schists, eclogites, amphibolites), non-sedimentary, typical of the Massif armoricain.
- Brown, sandy, stony, free-draining soils with low water retention and moderate fertility, despite highly varied underlying geology.
- A zone straddling Loire-Atlantique, Maine-et-Loire, and Vendée; vines planted on the slopes of the Loire, the Sèvre, the Maine, and around the lac de Grandlieu.
Human factors
- The melon B variety, more resistant to frost, was preferentially replanted following the winter of 1709, with records attesting its presence as early as the 17th century.
- Best practices became codified: melon B, high planting density, limited yields, harvest at full ripeness; AOC status granted in 1937.
Product characteristics
- Fine and delicate aromas, fruity or floral, with a dominant freshness on the palate.
- Still white wines with a characteristic slight spritz, served between 9 and 11 °C.
