Terroir
Natural factors
- Soils: in the flat Ászár district, marl-based barna erdőtalaj; in the hilly Neszmély district, lösz, mészkő, dolomit, and homokkő.
- Climate: 1,950–2,000 sunshine hours per year, 550–650 mm of precipitation, balanced, moderately moist and cool conditions.
- Danube microclimate: sunlight reflected off the river's surface — especially in the afternoon — benefits vines on north-facing slopes.
- Relief: vineyards situated predominantly on the western slopes of the Gerecse hills, at 150–300 m above sea level, on sun-exposed hillsides.
- The highest cadastral quality rating in the region is found in Dunaszentmiklós (366); the vast majority of vineyards are classified in cadastral class I.
Human factors
- Emperor Probus (2nd century AD) had his soldiers plant the Danube-facing slopes of the Gerecse; a funerary stele from Ószőlő bearing a vine-wreath relief attests to this.
- After phylloxera, Kadarka and Rácfekete declined; Olaszrizling, Ezerjó, Kékfrankos, and Oportó became widespread, and the borvidék was officially established in 1897.
Product characteristics
- Acid-driven white wines: pronounced acidity, fruity aromas, fresh and vibrant style, intended for consumption within 1–2 years.
- The Danube microclimate and cool conditions favour the production of wines rich in aromatic compounds and flavour substances. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
