Natural factors
- Lithology: upper Pleistocene loess deposits on the high plain; on slopes, sediments of clays, sands, and gravels (lower Pleistocene).
- Soils: cernoziom, cambic cernoziom, and grey soils, affected by erosion on slopes.
- Plateau relief with gentle inclination (below 2–3°), descending from 250–300 m (N/NW) to 80–100 m (E/SE); the Siret escarpment with slopes of 50–90°.
- Limited water reserves: sparse and discontinuous phreatic layers; local river recharge predominantly pluvio-nival (80–85%).
Human factors
- Red wines from this area require ageing and maturation of 3 to 5 years to reach their quality peak.
- The traditionally cultivated Băbească Neagră variety evolves favourably through barrel and bottle ageing in years with high potential.
Product characteristics
- Red wines with vivid colour, free of astringency, and a harmonious palate; high acidity lends vibrancy and freshness.
- Red wines are full-bodied and extractive, reaching their quality peak after 3–5 years of maturation and ageing.
Terroir / wine link
- South-facing slopes reduce malic acid, giving the wines a more balanced acidity and an absence of astringency thanks to moderate tannins.
