Natural factors
- Urgestein outcrops of the Wachau transition eastward into Löss terraces in the Kremstal, which also occur in the Traisental, Kamptal, and on the Wagram.
- In the Kamptal, volcanic soils are additionally present.
- The climate is shaped by the hot pannonisches Klima influence from the east and cool air currents from the Waldviertel.
- The diurnal temperature range, created by pannonian warmth and cool Waldviertel air, imparts a pronounced acidity structure to the wines.
- Urgestein weathering soils and volcanic soils produce wines with a mineral, spicy character, while Löss deposits tend toward rounder, fuller styles.
Human factors
- Production is almost 80% white wine; red wine (Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch) is grown primarily in the pannonian-influenced south and east.
- Family estates typically process their own grapes and sell directly at the cellar door; tourism and the wine economy are closely intertwined.
Product characteristics
- Urgestein/volcanic soils → mineral and spicy; Löss → round and fuller wine style.
- The diurnal temperature range (pannonian/Waldviertel) imparts a pronounced acidity structure to the wines.
