Terroir
Natural factors
- Geological substrate: thick loess layer (30–40 m) overlying an alternation of sandstones, limestones, and Tertiary sands
- Zonal soils: chestnut cernoziomuri, typic, cambic, and argillic-illuvial; on eroded slopes: regosols and erosisols
- Excessively continental climate: mean annual temperature 11°C, mean annual rainfall 450–500 mm, sunshine 2,200–2,300 hours, sum of positive temperatures 4,100–4,200°C/year
- Relief: Oltina structural plateau, 130–200 m elevation, with slopes of 10–30°; vineyards planted on the Danubian escarpment and terraces of torrential valleys
- Calcareous soils rich in iron oxides; the Danube and local topographic features within the area create a microclimate characterised by moisture, warmth, and luminosity
Human factors
- The vineyards are established on terraced slopes of 10–30°, with northern, north-eastern, and north-western aspects, along the Danubian escarpment
- The vine is cultivated in an unprotected training system or in high and semi-high forms with reserve spurs at the base of the vine stock
Product characteristics
- White wines ranging in colour from straw-yellow to greenish-yellow; red wines ranging from deep red to intense red-violet
- Full-bodied wines, sometimes with residual sugar, suitable for ageing, with an alcohol content frequently exceeding 12% vol.
