Natural factors
- Plural geology: marne, calcareous arenaria, galestro, and gypsum outcrop across the pre-Apennine landscape of the Oltrepò.
- The Messinian (late Miocene) is characterized by pale yellow marne with calcareous lenses, found in communes such as Montescano and Rovescala.
- The Oligocene covers approximately 13,000 ha of hillside; the Eocene brings scisti galestrini and scaly argille across approximately 19,000 ha of upper hillside.
