Terroir
Natural factors
- Vineyard altitude ranges from 30 to 400 m, with most vineyards situated on slopes.
- The climate is ηπειρωτικό κλίμα with characteristics of μεσογειακό κλίμα.
- Soils are of medium organic matter content, moderately alkaline pH, and relatively high calcium carbonate content.
Human factors
- Pella was known as 'ampeloessa' (vine-rich) and 'oinomitor' (mother of wine) since classical Macedonian antiquity.
- A church in Giannitsa was built using wine instead of water (c. 1860), and wooden treading troughs from that era are still preserved.
Terroir / wine link
- The ηπειρωτικό κλίμα with μεσογειακό κλίμα characteristics and the high calcium carbonate content of the soils are directly linked to the character of the ΠΓΕ Pella wines.
