Principal grape varieties
Terroir
Natural factors
- Vineyard altitude 300–800 m a.s.l., with strongly undulating terrain.
- Marked presence of CaCO₃ (calcium carbonate) in the soil — distinctly calcareous character.
- Typical μεσογειακό κλίμα: mean temperature 17 °C, mean rainfall 650 mm/year.
- Mountain massifs to the south shelter the vineyards from hot southerly winds, preventing heat stress.
- Cool northerly winds — unimpeded by the absence of mountain barriers to the north — slow the ripening process.
Human factors
- The Agricultural Cooperative Union of Πεζά was founded in 1933, forming the cornerstone of the region's viticultural and winemaking tradition.
- The ΠΟΠ for red wines was established in 1971; in 1993 the white wine of Πεζά was also recognised as a ΟΠΑΠ appellation.
Product characteristics
- White Βιλάνα: moderately deep yellow colour, moderate aromatic intensity, fresh on the palate, with moderate acidity and alcohol.
- Red Κοτσιφάλι/Μανδηλαριά: intensely aromatic character, high acidity, and a vivid purple colour with elegance.
Terroir / wine link
- The cool northerly winds limit heat stress and delay grape ripening.
