Terroir
Natural factors
- Coastal climate with a dual influence: maritime breeze from the Thermaic Gulf to the east, and the mountain wall of Όλυμπος–Pieria to the west.
- Average summer temperature of 22.6 °C; up to 42 frost days and 44 snow days in winter.
- Average rainfall of approximately 400 mm with a μεσογειακό κλίμα distribution: higher precipitation from October through April.
- Strong north-easterly winds in winter; light to moderate winds in spring and summer.
- Topography: a lowland zone towards the Thermaic Gulf, with semi-upland to upland vineyards on the lower slopes of Όλυμπος, Titaros, and the Pieria mountains.
Human factors
- Viticulture in Pieria dates back at least to 2500 BC, with a tradition of producing fine red wines.
- In Kolindros, local varieties such as Kolindrino, Xiriki, and Eftakilo were cultivated in a vineyard of over 2,000 stremma.
Product characteristics
- Prolonged high temperatures and abundant sunshine accumulate sugars and aromatic compounds in the grapes, leading to the production of liqueur wines.
- Liqueur wines from Pieria represent 10–15% of the region's total wine production and have received awards at national and international competitions.
