Terroir
Natural factors
- Vineyards on terraces from 100 to 350 m elevation on the western side of the Sithonia peninsula.
- Calcareous-schistose soils of medium organic matter content, moderately alkaline, with a high calcium carbonate concentration.
- Typical μεσογειακό κλίμα: mild winters, cool summers, sunshine exceeding 10 hours per day, and mean annual rainfall up to 500 mm.
- The summit of Όρος Μέλιτων (491.30 m) at the heart of the vineyard creates a cool pine-ridge microclimate that tempers the dry conditions.
Human factors
- Vineyards in Chalkidiki are documented as early as the 6th century BC on coins and in written sources.
- The vineyards are established on terraces along the western flank of Sithonia, between 100 and 350 m elevation.
Product characteristics
- The pedoclimatic characteristics of the zone impart "delightful aromas and distinctive colours" to the ΠΟΠ wines.
- The distinctive character of both the red and white wines is attributable to the varieties cultivated in the area for centuries and to their long-established acclimatisation.
Terroir / wine link
- The calcareous-schistose soils, with their high water-retention capacity, offset the dry climate and contribute to the aromatic profile of the wines.
