Terroir
Natural factors
- The parent substrate consists of dolomitic vapnenac (magnesian calcite) and ordinary vapnenac, with soils of light, sandy, and permeable texture.
- The crvenice of the area differ from typical crvenice by a higher sand content (~10%) and a slightly lower clay content; skeleton fraction can reach 10–40%.
- Two winds predominate: jugo (moist and warm) and bura (northerly, strong and cold); their constant movement reduces humidity in the leaf and cluster zone.
- The relief is typical karst, hilly and undulating; terraced vineyards with hand-built dry-stone walls without cement bear the hallmark of anthropomorphic terraced soils. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Human factors
- Terraced vineyards with hand-built dry-stone walls without cement — a practice whose continuity is presumed to date back to Roman times.
- Plavac mali crni arose from the spontaneous crossing of the indigenous varieties Crljenak Kaštelanski and Dobričić; it is the economically most significant red variety in Croatia. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Product characteristics
- Red wines display aromas of berry fruit with gentle herbal notes; white wines are distinguished by discreet fruitiness.
- The wines are rich in extract and alcohol, with lower total acidity, and are well suited to oak ageing and extended cellaring.
Terroir / wine link
- The lower acidity of Plavac mali is directly attributed to the mediteranska klima and the potassium-rich mineral composition of the soil.
