Terroir
Natural factors
- 4 communes in Saône-et-Loire, ~10 km west of Mâcon, arranged in a diagonal band across the southern Mâconnais
- Jurassic substrates (limestones and marls) predominate, with localised outcrops of Palaeozoic volcanic rhyolites
- Thin, stony, free-draining calcareous soils; clay soils on the lower slopes; acidic soils over rhyolite
- Asymmetric relief: gently sloping east-facing hillsides, steep west-facing slopes; small valleys forming cirques with north- and south-facing exposures
Human factors
- The 'taille à queue', trained in single or double arching and characteristic of the Mâconnais, is widely used to protect the vines against spring frost.
Product characteristics
- Young green-gold appearance; aromas of white flowers and citrus evolving toward hazelnut, toasted almond, vanilla, and flint. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
- The premiers crus, more intense (fruity, full-bodied, or mineral), are age-worthy wines requiring several years of cellaring. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Terroir / wine link
- Natural cirque relief combined with varied calcareous substrates creates a mosaic of mesoclimates, each climat expressing its own nuances in the wines.
