Terroir
Natural factors
- 39 communes in the Gironde, on the right bank of the Garonne, spanning approximately 60 km and encompassing plain, hillfoot, slope, and plateau. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
- A limestone bedrock of Astéries (Oligocene) overlaid with decalcification clays of varying sand and gravel content, forming an environment well suited to the vine.
- Quaternary formations: an ancient terrace of clayey gravels, a low terrace of gravels and pebbles, and low-lying areas of silty-clay 'palus' soils.
Human factors
- A typical blend of 70% sémillon, 25% sauvignon, and 5% muscadelle, with no accessory varieties permitted and no imposed blending rules. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Terroir / wine link
- Well-drained soils are required: hydromorphic parcels and valley-bottom sites are excluded, promoting grape concentration for the production of moelleux wines.
