Natural factors
- Coastal soils are loam-clay or loam-sand in texture and very shallow, with bedrock encountered within 25–50 cm, resulting in limited root development.
- Inland zone (Manduria, Sava, Avetrana): alternating shallow and deep soils of medium texture, with root penetration restricted to 50 cm.
- The Salentine Peninsula: calcareous and calcareous-dolomitic ridges (serre) interrupted by flat erosional channels.
