Terroir
Natural factors
- Vineyards at 300–600 m elevation, on the edges of the Limagne basin and the slopes of volcanic formations
- Highly varied soils: marls, basalts, volcanic colluvium, granites, gravels — with good thermal behaviour and low water-holding capacity
- A foehn effect generated by the Chaîne des Puys and the Massif du Sancy shields the vineyards from moist westerly air masses, limits rainfall (approx. 600 mm) and sustains high temperatures
- Frequent basaltic colluvium imparts a mineral and spicy character to the wines
- Semi-continental climate; altitude preserves the aromatic freshness of whites and rosés despite high levels of ripeness
