Terroir
Natural factors
- Soils dominated by Eocene marne classified as 'Flysch di Cormons' (known in Friulian dialect as 'ponca'), shared with the Colli Orientali del Friuli and the Collio.
- Monte Bernadia (1,732 m) acts as a natural barrier against cold tramontana winds and reflects sunlight onto the vineyards below.
- Annual rainfall exceeding 2,200 mm over approximately 130 rainy days: among the highest of any appellation in Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
- Slopes frequently exceeding 30% on terraces sometimes less than one metre wide: every farming operation is carried out exclusively by hand.
- Mean temperature of 13.6 °C with summer peaks above 30 °C; pre-harvest diurnal temperature swings contribute to forming a true 'climatic island'.
Human factors
- The village is documented from 1273; in 1893 a Verduzzo from Torlano received a certificate of merit at the Friulian Wine Fair in Udine.
- The cultivated variety is Verduzzo friulano in the local clone 'verduzzo giallo', trained in the cappuccina system (double inverted bow) on terraces worked entirely by hand.
Product characteristics
- An off-dry wine of golden colour, lightly tannic, with aromas of acacia, plum, apricot, and mountain honey, and good total acidity.
- Verduzzo friulano is among the extremely rare white-berried varieties with tannins in the skins: balancing tannins, acidity, and sweetness is the defining production challenge of Ramandolo.
Terroir / wine link
- The 'ponca' (Flysch di Cormons), nutrient-poor Eocene marne, limits the vigour of Verduzzo friulano, favouring quality at the expense of quantity.
