Natural factors
- Rolling hills terrain, with vineyards on alternating hillsides from the coast up to 350 m elevation.
- Predominantly ασβεστόλιθος soils, locally sandy-clay-silty and silty-clayey.
- Mediterranean, xerothermic climate: no rainfall in summer, sea breezes, ~300 mm/year.
- Winter winds from the northeast of moderate intensity; in summer, seasonal μελτέμια prevail.
- Summer temperatures 25–30 °C, winter 10–14 °C; maximum in July, minimum in January.
Human factors
- The Minoans were producing resin-treated wine as early as 1700 BC, while clay vessels from Myrtos date to 2200–2700 BC.
- The addition of pine resin to amphorae originally served to seal and preserve them, not to add aroma.
